One of the many things I love about my job, is watching children grow. One minute they are a tiny baby and then the next they are running around, conversing with me, and talking about which princess is their favorite. I have had the joy of watching these girls grow. I have been blessed to photograph this family since their oldest daughter was just a year old. I love being able to go back to the old image files and see the changes, but yet that same face, still there. And I wanted to share this photo history with you here…
What if the best picture of your family is one of you in your natural environment? What if right now was the perfect time to photograph your family? What if right now- while you are at home, making breakfast, going through your morning routine, in your PJ's was it? It is!
I love LOVE when families ask me to come to their home. There is something about the familiarity of the location, especially the little ones, that creates a different vibe. It is more convenient for everyone - we don't have to worry about the weather, finding a location, if it's raining or shining, too hot, too cold...it is less stressful and so fun! As you can see from this shoot, this type of shoot is relaxed and fun for everyone! It is a true view of your life and all the beauty involved!
I am especially drawn to these black and whites. Enjoy!
As summer comes to an end and our anticipation for fall grows more and more each day, many families start to think about having family photos taken. The holidays are rapidly approaching, the kids are back in school and the temperatures are a little bit cooler – fall is the perfect time to get professional photos taken. The number one question I get asked when a client books a session is, “What should we wear?!” Here are some tips to follow so that you can be on your way to fun, stylish and beautiful family portraits.
1) Color – It used to be that everyone wanted to coordinate - wearing white t-shirts and jeans or every family member wearing the same outfit. Those days are GONE!! Fall is a gorgeous time of year and the color of your clothes should reflect the season! Earth tones, jewel tones and bright vibrant colors are always a great option during this time of year. All these colors are deep, rich and photograph beautifully. Take a look at Pantone's Fall Fashion Colors for 2015 – these are rich and vibrant and all look beautiful together and give you some terrific ideas for a place to start!
The best portrait incorporates a few colors that are in the same family, have the same tone and coordinate with each other. You really want to stay away from being too “matchy matchy”. Here are some great visuals of some family photo shoots where they have worn colors that coordinate beautifully together.
2) Texture – By adding texture to your outfit you are creating a visually stimulating photograph without much effort! Chunky sweaters, knit scarves, denim jeans, crisp button down shirts – these are all great for fall weather and help to add dimension and interest to your photos. Check out these beautiful families and how the texture in their outfits really makes the photograph pop!
3) Layers – Add a fashionable twist and keep warm at the same time! Layers are your key to fun, colorful and warm fall photos. Layers can help add pops of color and texture and are great for keeping warm (or cooling down, depending on what part of the country you live in) during the duration of your photo shoot. I love this family’s fun use of layering! Another great part of layering is that you can take off a layer and have an entirely different look!
The final tip that I always give to my clients is to start thinking about everyone’s outfits at least a week before the photo shoot. Lay them all out on the bed or ground so you can see how they look side by side. If you can, leave the outfits out for a day or two so you can have a second look and make any changes (or additional purchases) well ahead of your photo session. You want to be as calm and relaxed as you can be the day of the shoot, so do your homework ahead of time!
What will you wear for your Fall Family Photos?
Getting in front of the camera is just not natural for everyone. I can attest to this personally. I am so often behind the camera that when I get in front of it I freeze up. My heart literally races, my palms sweat. I stress. I believe as photographers it is our job to help and reassure our clients – especially those little ones (and their parents)!
As a photographer I do get nervous. I think… a lot. What if they don’t love their images? What if they don’t like me? What if I do something embarrassing? Yes, I do think like that! Of course once I get to my session and begin working that unbelievably manages to fall away. I get completely immersed in my work. I remember why I love this. There are some things I do, however, to really prepare for my sessions.
My goal coming out of a session is to have images that tell a story. I want my clients to look through their gallery and have every single photo resonate with them on a deeper level. I want them to see their children as they see them. Not just as I see them. That is why it is so important to me as your photographer to take some time to talk to you – find out what kind of photographs you like, what you are looking for. It is also important that the day of your session, I take some time to make everyone comfortable, to have some fun! This is especially true when I am working with little ones. My goal is to give you not only memorable and beautiful photos but an equally memorable and beautiful experience.
To celebrate my return I am offering 2 great specials for the fall - call today to book a session!
I have been around and doing shoots but haven't had much time to blog! I started a new job this year which has taken all my energy and on top of that I moved to Lake City Minnesota but now that things are settled, I am ready to get my groove back! Here are a few shoots that I have done over the past few months. I am looking forward to a busy fall - extending my service area. I will be continuing to work with my Twin Cities Clients but also will now be serving Southeastern Minnesota, so if you live in Red Wing, Lake City or The Rochester area - give me a call!
